Akanthou is one of the nine Municipalities of Cyprus that are under Turkish occupation since 1974. Since then, all the legitimate inhabitants of Akanthou are refugees and dispersed all over Cyprus. Some of them are emigrants in Greece and U.K. The township of Akanthou is located in the Famagusta district. The municipality was founded on July 10th 1908. Akanthou has no experience in European projects but is interested in new partnerships with towns from Italy i.e (Bergamo) or other European countries, as well as participating in projects in the field of culture. Akanthou was honoured in 2007 by the Academy of Athens for the organisation of four scientific and folklore conferences, the papers of which include important announcements, on historical, social, archaeological and folklore issues.
