Lefkara is a rural municipality situated in the southern part of Cyprus (Larnaca district). It was of the first Municipalities of Cyprus, founded in 1883. The town has a population of 1100 and its economy is mainly based on the production of Handmade Lace, Silversmith and on the rural tourism sector. Lefkara has a long experience in working on European projects, mainly in the areas of culture (both as a lead partner, as well as partners). Our Municipality is well known for its Handmade Lace production, Silversmith and unique architecture. The tradition of making embroideries in Lefkara goes back centuries and the embroideries are famous all over the world as the ‘Lefkaritiko’ lace. Lefkara is member of the Charter of European Rural Communities (http://www.europeancharter.eu/) that has been awarded with the Golden Star Award in 2010 by the European Commission and member to the E.G.T.C Amphictyony network (www.amphictyony.gr). We are interested in forming a network of towns which produce handmade lace and embroidery as well as participating in projects on the following themes: culture, architecture and history.
Possible themes for cooperation
Annual activities: Lefkara Festival in the mid of August every year
Points of interest: Village architecture with the houses with stone-built walls and the narrow streets
Typical products: Handmade Lace, Silversmith, Local sweets and a traditional dish Lefkaritikos Ttavas. Lefkara laces or Lefkaritika were inscribed in 2009 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (UNESCO).
